Crypt of Eszterházy

The Esterházy family crypt stands north of the centre, on the southern edge of the Roman Catholic cemetery. The building, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence, is a polygonal, neo-Gothic-eclectic building built by Count János Károly Esterházy (who is buried in Galanta, but his will states that his heart was laid to rest here). After the coffins were placed, the cavities were sealed with red marble slabs. Here lies, for example, Gr. Karolina Esterházy, to whom Franz Schubert dedicated several of his compositions and who was herself a pupil of Schubert, is buried here.
